About Frank D. Parent

Frank D. Parent was an American educator and civil rights leader. He was born in Los Angeles in 1918 and attended the University of California, Los Angeles. After graduating, he began teaching in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
In the 1950s, Parent became an active leader in the civil rights movement. He was a founding member of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and was a key organizer of the 1961 Freedom Rides. He also served as the president of the Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP and was a leader of the 1963 March on Washington.
Parent was also a leader in the education reform movement. He was a founding member of the California Association of Black School Educators and worked to improve educational opportunities for African-American students. He also served as a consultant to the Los Angeles Unified School District and was a member of the California State Board of Education.
Parent’s work was recognized with numerous awards, including the NAACP’s Spingarn Medal in 1963 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995. He passed away in 2005, but his legacy lives on in the work of civil rights and educational reformers.
